Data Management Bar Graphs


Over the last month we have been learning various components of Data Management and Probability. This week you learned how to collect and organize discrete primary data by creating a questionnaire whereby you asked your fellow classmates a question and provided them with five possible choices to choose from. This was then followed by you displaying the data in the form of a bar graph. As I look through your bar graphs, I am pleased to say that you all followed my instructions and example on the board. Each graph was labeled appropriately at the top, x and y axis, each bar was color coded to differentiate their meaning, and each bar was labeled according to what it represented. Furthermore, the topics that you all chose varied. Some students asked their classmates about their favourite ice cream flavour, food, animal, colour, sports team, sport and so forth. Due to the accuracy of the data you collected and graphed, I have decided that the information will be used in our next math lesson where you will learn how to display data through a stem-and-leaf plot graph.
Great job students I am very proud of your work!

Water Bottle Collection


Students could you please collect any empty 500mL water bottles and bring them to class as we are going to conduct a science experiment on Friday, November 13, 2009 which correlates with our current science unit on sound.

All Charged Up


Students, as we continue our unit on understanding matter and energy, I would like you to conduct an experiment at home and write down your conclusions. For instructions on how to conduct the experiment go to the National Geographic Kids website and it will guide you through the steps to achieve your desired results. The experiment is entitled, All Charged Up and only requires you to have a comb and facet with running water. Students don’t forget to right down your procedure and results so we can discuss them in class.

Nutritional Snacks and Lunches


Starting school with a full tummy gives you lots of energy to learn throughout the day. Thus, having a healthy breakfast will kick start your day and allow your brain to wake up and begin processing valuable information. As your school day continues, time is allotted for snacks to be eaten as well as your lunch. Parents when making your child's lunch please pack them nutritional meals that consist of all four food groups. I encourage healthy fruits and vegetables instead of sugary treats that do not hold any nutritional value. Further, parents please remember that both my classroom and Blue Willow Public School are a nut free facilities. Parents if you would like nutritional snack and lunch ideas I encourage you to go to the teach nutrition website which provides helpful tips. Further I encourage you to sit down with your child and explain healthy food choices and how to construct a healthy meal.

Back to School


Starting a new school year may bring forth anxiety and fear of the unknown. However you do not have to feel this way. There are many resources available to both you and your parents to assist with the transition whether it be a new school, new teacher or new grade. I recommend that you browse through the information on the Family Education website to gain valuable information that will ease your school jitters. The headings entitled, what parents need to know this school year, breakfast & lunch ideas & recipes, school & homework help by grade level (k-12), back-to-school safety, getting ready for back to school and educational printables for kids provide numerous resources under their respective headings. Explore and discover the website and I encourage all my students and their parents to come together and discuss the valuable information provided because it will assist their child in their learning process.

Mad Science Workshop


Mad Scientists will be coming to our school and into our classroom tomorrow with a fun, interesting and educational science workshop. Structured as an in-class field trip, the workshop will take place in the afternoon and be hands on and interactive. Professional scientists will teach a lesson that is reflective of what we have been learning in our matter and energy science unit. Unique and innovative scientific equipment will be brought in to further your understanding of the concepts being taught. Students be prepared to put on your white lab coats tomorrow and take on the role of a scientist and have fun. Math Test


As we finish our math unit on Number Sense and Numeration, we will be having our first unit test on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. I have posted below some sample questions to help you prepare for the test. The test will be divided into four sections such as rounding to the nearest tenth, addition and subtraction of two digit numbers, addition and subtraction of three digit numbers and division of dollar amounts into thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. Students, you will have the opportunity to find out the answers of the practice test as they will be posted on the class blog on Sunday, October 11, 2009. Furthermore, a hard copy of the answers will be handed out in class on Monday, October 12, 2009. Students if you have any questions please leave a message on our blog comment board and I will respond as soon as possible.

Students please return the forms attached to your letters of introduction to your parents and yourself. These forms are to be filled out completely and handed in to me by Monday, September 14, 2009. If you have lost the parent letter of introduction or student letter of introduction, please click on the appropriate link highlighted above and you will be provided an electronic copy of the document. Welcome!


Welcome Grade Four Students and Parents.

My name is Ms. Frois
and I will be your teacher for this school year. I am happy to be back at Blue Willow Public School and I look forward to an exciting year with all of you. I have sent home two letters of introduction, one for you and one for your parents introducing myself and my intention and expectations for the school year. As mentioned in the letter, I have created an educational blog for which you are currently viewing which will provide beneficial educational information. I encourage you and your parents to visit our classroom blog frequently as I will be posting daily lessons taught in class, educational activities, a monthly calendar with due dates of assignments, practice quizzes and tests, reminder notices and so forth. Furthermore, I will be positing educational games for students to play in their free time and resources for parents to assist their children throughout the school year. Through the class blog, I welcome the opportunity to hear from you in the comments section. This medium will allow me the opportunity to be aware of any ideas, comments, concerns or questions you may have for me. As a class, we have a lot of work to do this year but by including the class blog in our learning process we will be able to have an educational experience that is enlightening, productive, fun, exciting and filled new and interactive ways of learning.
